Multi-page forms
By the end of this page you will know how to split a long form into steps and let people save their progress and finish later.
A long form asked all at once is often abandoned. Splitting it into steps makes it easier to complete.
Prerequisites
Section titled “Prerequisites”A Pro license, active on this site.
Split a form into steps
Section titled “Split a form into steps”- Add a Page break field wherever a new step should start — it appears in Add fields only when Pro is active.
- Optionally set its own “Next” button text and “Previous” button text.
In the builder it appears as a line, so you can see where each step ends; visitors never see it.
On the published form:
- Numbered steps, connected by a line, show progress: a completed step gets a checkmark, the current one is highlighted, and the ones ahead are dimmed. This is also real text read by screen readers (“Step 2 of 3”), not only a visual bar.
- Each step has Next and Previous buttons.
- Each step is checked on the server before moving on. Nobody can skip to the end without completing the previous steps, even with JavaScript turned off.
- Previous does not require the current step to be complete, and the answers already given are kept.
- A step whose fields are all hidden by conditional logic is skipped, and the numbering adjusts.
Save and continue later
Section titled “Save and continue later”Under the form’s Multiple pages settings, check Allow saving and continuing later. A Save and continue later button then appears on each step; it does not require the current step to be complete.
- If the person already entered a valid email in the form, they receive an email with a link to pick up where they left off.
- The link is also in the browser’s address bar, so it works even without an email address.
- The link works for 30 days. After that, the saved progress is deleted automatically by a daily cleanup.
- When the form is finally submitted, the saved progress is deleted: it is now an entry. Advancing between steps and “save and continue” both use the same underlying saved progress — the only difference is whether an email is sent.
This option only applies to forms with more than one step.
File uploads across steps
Section titled “File uploads across steps”A file uploaded on one step is kept for the rest of the form. If the visitor goes back to that step, the field shows Already uploaded with the file name, and is no longer required in the browser — they only choose a file again if they want to replace it.
- Files are uploaded when the visitor moves to the next step, once the whole step is valid. Previous and Save and continue later do not upload files, because they do not check the step.
- Files that never become part of an entry are deleted: those of saved progress that expires after 30 days, and those of a field that ends up hidden by conditional logic.
Edge cases
Section titled “Edge cases”- If the Pro license is removed or lapses, an existing multi-page form is shown as a single page, with every field and any already-collected answers intact — nothing is deleted. Reactivating Pro brings the paging back exactly as it was.
- Saving that same form once, without a license, does not delete its page breaks. The builder just cannot add a new one, or turn a form that never had page breaks into a multi-page one, until Pro is active again.
